Tuesday Tutorial: Paper Piecing with Rubber Stamps

Tutorial: Paper Piecing with Stamped Image
by Linda Cummings for Whimsie Doodles

Supplies:
White Cardstock (base for stamped image)
Colored Cardstock or Patterned Paper for piecing
Small pointed scissors or craft knife
Adhesive
Dimensional Tape or Dots
Stamp
Acrylic Block
Ink
Fine Black Permanent Marker

Directions:

1. Once you have chosen the stamp you want to paper piece, you can then decide the colors
and amount of cardstock or patterned paper you need. Decide also if you want to color any of the image with markers or colored pencils. Color those areas before paper piecing.

2. For this tutorial I used the 'Leah Bunny' rubber stamp. Looking at the image, I decided I
wanted to use a pink patterned paper for her costume. The paper I chose had a reverse side
with a green pattern so I decided to use it.

3. I stamped the image on the white cardstock. I chose a white cardstock and a black ink
that I could use with Copic markers. I colored the hair, face, hands, feet, and shoes.*

4. I stamped the image twice on the pink patterned paper and once on the green patterned
paper. From one of the pink papers I cut out the bunny ears with the hat and the entire costume.
When cutting out the pieces leave as much of the black outline as possible; however, try not to
leave any of the colored paper that is outside the outline.
I adhered the bunny ears with hat and costume to the stamped/colored image with regular adhesive, not dimensional.

5. I cut the tummy area, the inside of the ears, and the shoes* out of the green paper. I adhered the tummy area and the inside of the ears with regular adhesive.

6. If you want to create a dimensional look it is important to start with the bottom pieces. You want to build up the image so that the dimensions look correct. In the image 'Leah Bunny', I wanted the ears, legs, and feet to stand out. To achieve that look I cut out another set  of ears (but not hat)and lower legs from the pink paper. I adhered these with dimensional tape.  I also adhered the green shoes with dimensional tape.

7. After you complete the paper piecing you can correct small areas with a black marker if
needed.

8. To finish my image I chose the digital stamp 'Easter Basket' for 'Leah Bunny' to sit on.
*After I colored the basket I decided to paper piece her shoes with green so they would stand
out better against the basket.
